Each Zanmi* basket has been hand sewn by women living in the Central Plateau region of Haiti. Using repurposed fabrics each woman has developed her own style, making each basket unique and one of a kind. Some of the women are elderly and their craftsmanship is not as fine as others with more nimble fingers. So the baskets are not 'perfect' in shape or technique and the baskets vary greatly depending on the woman's ability and technique.

The women in our project live in La Hoye, and are desperately poor. They do not have running water, electricity, or any means of earning an income.

In 2010 Malibu High School's Zanmi Club was formed to help the women in La Hoye. Students have helped sell the women's handcrafts and 100% of all their sales proceeds has been donated to Project Medishare's Zanmi Project. They are helping provide a source of income for the ladies in our project and giving them both an opportunity to earn a living and hope for a better life.

*Zanmi means 'friend' in Haitian creole.
